Overview of the Local Government Pension Scheme in Scotland
The Local Government Pension Scheme in Scotland is a funded, defined benefit, statutory occupational pension scheme. It’s one of the main public service pension schemes in Scotland, serving more than 200,000 active member.
The scheme offers its members a variety of valuable benefits, including an annual pension upon retirement, the ability to exchange a portion of that pension for a tax-free lump sum, the opportunity to enhance pension value through additional contributions, and benefits for the dependants of members who pass away while in service.
Although the scheme is administered by 11 local government authorities, SPPA (Scottish Public Pension Agency) is responsible for maintaining and updating the scheme’s regulations in accordance with policies established by the Scottish and UK Governments. SPPA also manages Independent Dispute Resolution Procedures and offers policy guidance to ministers and the scheme’s advisory board.
